Scientific Papers 1970 - 1975
As a result of my Ph. D. work eleven scientific papers were published - see list
Commercial Publications 1974 - 1990
Various publications arose out of my career positions on Laser Raman Spectroscopy, Isotope Ratio Mass Spectroscopy, Molecular Modeling and Scientific Computing. One interesting paper I wrote was entitled "End of Term Report", Personal Computer World, 1986, 158 (written under the pseudonym George R Bedford) which gave an analysis of the impact of the Alvey Program intended to help the UK computer industry develop fifth generation computers. Interestingly the big names of the project - GEC, Plessey, STC, Ferranti no longer figure as companies never mind producers of computers. The UK computer industry by and large ignored the microcomputer/pc generation and the Internet. The UK government of course actively campaigned for the OSI/ISO network architecture rather than Internet standards so there intervention would seem to have been largely negative!
Probably as a result of the involvement of U-Micro with chemical modelling (a program called CHEMMOD) I started to think about what is now known as nanotechnology. This was in 1989 so at around the same time as Eric Drexler published his book “Engines of Creation”. I started to put forward a patent application for Molecular Factories but was unable to take things further at that time. Interest in ultra-strong fibres is still strong of course and an integral aspect of ideas such as “Sky Hooks” which would turn going into near earth orbit into an elevator ride.
Heart Valve Project 1990 - 1994
Whilst working on the heart valve project I was responsible for identifying carbon coated titanium as the most likely material to meet the very stringent requirements and patents were applied for and obtained (see here for US patent)
Internet Publications 1994 - present
When we started our Internet Service Provider (ISP) business there were very few websites actually around – and most of them were university sites. Accordingly I set up a few sites based on interests I had, as follows (links refer to archived copies which were of later versions of the original sites).
First (October 1994) was the companies own website:
http://web.archive.org/web/19970127224420/http://www.u-net.net/
and then (December 1994) I put together a compilation of chemistry related sites in the UK:
http://web.archive.org/web/19970207020637/http://www.u-net.com/ukchem/
Of special interest here was my attempt to start an academic publishing revolution:
http://web.archive.org/web/19970207043022/www.u-net.com/ukchem/cybrchem/home.htm
which later became:
http://www.netsci-journal.com/docs/publish.htm
Finally also before the end of 1994 I put together a site on British trees which combined information on conservation with forestry:
http://web.archive.org/web/19990508132127/www.u-net.com/trees/
I continued with the website until 2004 when I donated it to the Woodland Trust who are developing it further:
http://www.british-trees.com
Note that the URL’s for these sites were originally sub directories of the U-NET web site but later got their own domains.
Another interesting series of domains that we registered in 1995 was of UK cities – these have become websites for those towns but our involvement ceased quite quickly. These included:
After retiring I produced:
My latest sites are:
